Willie Lonzell “Bro” Lewis


WILLIE LONZELL “BRO” LEWIS, son of the late John Jasper Lewis and Lillian Blanch Solomon Lewis, was born on June 11, 1940, in Halifax County, North Carolina, and entered into eternal rest and peace on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

During his early life, he professed faith and belief in Jesus Christ and became a member of the Enon Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina.  He served for many years as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, Senior Choir member, regular Bible study attendant, and Vacation Bible school instructor. He remained dedicated to these duties and faithful as a  member until his demise. 

Willie attended the former McIver High School in Littleton, where he graduated as Salutatorian with the class of 1958. He later attended North Carolina A &T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art.

He was inducted into the United States Army and received a Rifle Marksmanship Medal, A National Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on January 24, 1971.

Family photos 035On November 24, 1973, Willie was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Marion Beatrice Harris, and God blessed this union with one daughter, Angela Nichole Lewis.

He was employed as an Art teacher with the Halifax County School Public System until his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed working with his students and helping them develop their individual talents. In the community, he served on the Halifax County Planning Board for several years.

Willie and his wife owned and operated a small business, Wil-Mar Lettering and Copy Service. He was a talented artist and spent most of his free time painting portraits and designing signs and posters.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Pierce.

Those remaining to forever cherish the fond memories of his life are his wife, Marion Lewis, and daughter, Angela Lewis of the home; his sister, Della Lewis Clark (Robert) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; two other brothers-in-law, Lewis Calvin Skelton (Shirley) of Pickerington, OH, and John Pierce of New Castle, DE; one uncle-in-law, William G. Harris of Baltimore, MD; three nieces, Cynthia Pierce Pyles, Sharon Clark, and Vonetta Cherisse Pierce; four nephews, Joseph Lewis, Keith Pierce, Kevin Pierce, and Jason Clark; and a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Enon Baptist Church in Littleton, NC. The Pastor, Rev. Fred Thorpe, will eulogize, and burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, March 14, 2014, from 7:00-8:00 P.M.
