Simon Edwards, Jr.

SIMON EDWARDS, JR., son of the late Simon Edwards, Sr. and Louvnia DeLoatch Edwards, began his journey with life on December 13, 1950, in Conway, North Carolina. He answered God’s call to eternal rest and peace on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, at his home in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, with his lovely wife and family by his side.

During his early life, Simon accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined Conway First Baptist Church in Conway, North Carolina. After relocating to Maryland, he became a member of Galilee Baptist Church in Suitland, Maryland.

Simon received his formal education in the public schools of Northampton County, North Carolina, and graduated from Northampton County High School with the class of 1969.

He then joined the United States Air Force and was employed as a Military Police (MP) Officer and had one tour of combat duty in Viet Nam. He served his country with honor for four years and received an Honorable Discharge. Simon continued his career as a Civilian Military Police and retired after declining health prevailed.

In 1983, Simon was united in marriage to the love of his life, the former Nettie Manley. This union was blessed with two children, and Simon had three children prior to this marriage.

He was a devoted family man who enjoyed getting together for BBQ’s with family and friends, traveling up and down the coast visiting family members, and taking family cruises, which was his most favorite. Even while fighting his illness, he often mentioned his upcoming Caribbean Cruise set for July 2020.

In addition to his parents, Simon was preceded in death by three brothers, Bennie DeLoatch, Curtis Edwards, and Jimmy Lee Edwards; and his son, Mitchell White.

Those remaining to forever celebrate his life and cherish his precious memories are his devoted wife, Nettie M. Edwards of the home; his children, Derrick Devon Edwards (Loretha) of Chicage, IL, Mark Smith of Laurel, MD, Atish Dixon of Greensboro, NC, Candace Edwards of Capital Heights, MD, and Kia Edwards of Washington, DC; two sisters, Eva Morris (David) of Hyattsville, MD, and Gloria Everett (Melvin) of Conway, NC; five brothers, James Edwards (Malinda) of Greensboro, NC, Harvey Edwards (Belinda) of Conway, NC, Purcell Edwards of Bladensburg, MD, Vernell Edwards (Gwendolyn) and Stevie Edwards (Vanessa) all of Bowie, MD; nineteen grandchildren; another sister-in-law, Karen M. Alston; another brother-in-law, Johnny Manley (Faye); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Graveside rites will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at the Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church, 1991 Roanoke Chapel Road, Littleton, NC. The Pastor, Rev. Timothy Edwards, will deliver the eulogy. Due to Covid-19 guidelines, only the immediate family will be in attendance.
