Rev. Dr. William Thurman Nicholson, Sr.

Rev. Dr. William Thurman Nicholson, Sr. was born in Halifax County, North Carolina, on July 13, 1945, to the late William Henry Nicholson and Boyd Harris Nicholson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Robert, Harold, and Charles Nicholson.

During his early life, William professed faith in Jesus Christ, was baptized, and joined the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, under the leadership of Rev. Charles Whitaker. He served faithfully on the Usher and Trustee Boards and became the President of both. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1980, later becoming the Chairman of the Deacon Board and also the teacher for the Adult Sunday School Class. William remained a dedicated member of his church until ill health prevailed.

William received his formal education at the Old Everetts School and later transferred to McIver High School in Littleton, North Carolina, where he graduated with the class of 1964.

On November 28, 1966, he was united in Holy Matrimony to his childhood friend, Victoria Pearson. God blessed this union with three children.

William became employed with the former J.P. Stevens and Company of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. With high ambitions, he held positions as Loom Operator, Loom Technician, and Management. After thirty-seven years of working in the cotton mill, the plant closed. Pushing forward, William enrolled at Halifax Community College in Weldon, North Carolina, earned a degree in Industrial Maintenance, and found employment at Lowe’s Distribution Center in Garysburg, North Carolina.

Upon retirement, and after a vision from God, William received spiritual guidance and encouragement from his Pastor, Rev. Dr. Vernon Bryant. Under the leadership of Rev. Dr. C. E. McCollum and the Eastern Carolina Christian College and Seminary of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, he earned a Bachelor of Theology, a Master of Divinity, and a Doctor of Ministry in Worship Studies. He was ordained as a Minister in 2009.

“Thurman”, as he was affectionately called, enjoyed vacationing and camping with his family, hunting with his beagles, raising rabbits, farming, gardening, sitting under the tree “Shooting the breeze” with his family and friends, and preaching the Word of God. He was loved and cherished by many.

He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at his home in the Sunnyside Community of Littleton, North Carolina, surrounded by his loved ones.

Those left with treasured memories of his life and the lasting legacy of his love are his devoted wife, Victoria, of the home; his children, Angela Jackson (Joe, Jr.) of Jamestown, NC,  William Nicholson, Jr. (Felecia) of Littleton, NC, and Candace Jefferson (Scholar) of Littleton, NC; eight grandchildren who called him “Papa” and whom he loved dearly, William J.
