Raymond Hawkins, Sr.

RAYMOND HAWKINS, SR., the fifth of the eleven children of the late Junnie Hawkins and Connie Hockaday Hawkins, was born on June 4, 1929, in Halifax County, North Carolina.

Raymond accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior during his early life. He received his first formal teachings of Christ at the Walnut Grove Sunday school in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, which was started by his grandfather, Captain Hawkins. He later joined the Carter’s Chapel Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and remained a member until God called him to his eternal home.

Raymond attended the Halifax County Public School System for a brief period before spending the majority of his formative years on the farm with his father and grandfather. He later gained employment with Rosemary Bonded Warehouse in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and retired after fifty-seven years of dedicated, loyal service.

On September 25, 1948, Raymond was united in matrimony to the former Lenora Wade and celebrated seventy-one years of marriage on September 25, 2019.  God blessed this union with four children and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren whom they loved and cherished.

After a brief illness, Raymond peacefully transitioned into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, October 8, 2019, at his home in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, surrounded by his devoted family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Raymond is now rejoicing with his great-grandson, Cortez Pierce; and his siblings, Gradie H. Kearney, Lucille H. Hairston, Birtee H. Mason, Jesse Hawkins, Clifton Hawkins, and Minnie H. Moody.

Treasured memories of his life and love will forever remain with his beloved wife, Lenora Wade Hawkins of the home; his children, Dorothy Hughes (Gilbert), Noralene Pierce, Sandra Hawkins, and Raymond Hawkins, Jr. all of Roanoke Rapids, NC; ten grandchildren, Lisa G. Robinson (Darryl), Vernon Pierce, Yulonda Pierce, Steven Pierce, Shantel Pierce, Greg Young, Jr., Moneeka R. Austin (Nick), Raymond Hawkins, III, Bryanna Lynch, and Vajaran Lynch; twenty-two great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren;  his loving siblings, Mattie H. Brown of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Ophelia H. Brown of Hyattsville, MD, Arbor Hawkins of Clinton, MD, Sterling Hawkins (Mae) of Washington, DC, and Rachel H. Wills of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and a host of special nieces, nephews, adopted sons and daughters, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at the Carter’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 490 Everetts School Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Rev. Richard L. Battle will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Hawkins Family Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home from 12:00 Noon – 8:30 P.M. on Saturday, October 12, 2019, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 -7:00 P.M. The body may also be viewed at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
