RANDY MAURICE “SPIKE” JONES was escorted to his eternal home by one of God’s angels on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. He was born to Jimmie C. Jones and the late Donna Faye Haynes Jones on December 27, 1972, at Halifax Memorial Hospital in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
During his early life, Randy professed faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of Saint Matthews Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, where he remained until his departure.
Randy’s formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System, and he graduated from Northwest Halifax High School in Littleton, North Carolina, with the class of 1991. He then entered Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and received his bachelor’s degree in 1996. In the spring of 1994, Randy pledged with the Beta Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. the Lordz of the Underground. His line name was #1 Double Deuce. He was also the program director of “Voice of the Vikings”, and on-air host for Neo Soul Cafe’ of WRVS-FM 89.9 at Elizabeth City State University.
Randy enjoyed officiating, sports, the lottery, socializing at the gas station, screaming at the TV during the San Antonio Spurs, Carolina Tarheels, and Dallas Cowboys games, and organizing the Border Clash. He was a part of creating the Border Clash, an organization that plans basketball competitions between North Carolina and Virginia teams. For a number of years, he commentated at the Down East Classics and CIAA Tournaments, and received numerous awards and recognitions.
Randy was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Natarsha Edmonds, and God blessed this union with three children.
Those remaining to forever treasure the precious memory of his life and to share the legacy of his love are his wife of twenty-one years, Natarsha Jones of the home; his daughter, Tayla Jones of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Trent and Trevor Jones of the home; his father, Jimmie C. Jones of Roanoke Rapids, NC; three brothers, Maurice Banks, Timothy Jones and Jamie Jones all of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his maternal grandmother, Lillian Haynes Williams of Florida; his mother-in-law, Patricia A. Edmonds of Baltimore, MD; his sister-in-law, Nina Edmonds of Baltimore, MD; four aunts, Lina Jones, Georgia Boyd, and Dorothy Jones all of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Helena Smith of Merritt Island, FL; four uncles, Franklin Haynes (Deborah) of Port St. John, FL, Melvin Haynes (Lisa) of Cocoa, FL, Linwood Haynes of Clarksville, TN, and Bobby Jones of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and special friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, May 17, 2019, at the funeral home. Rev. John Rooks will eulogize, and burial will follow in the Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The body will repose from 12:00 Noon – 8:30 P.M. on Thursday, May 16, 2019, and from 10:30 A.M. – 12:00 Noon prior to the funeral time.
