On September 12, 1945, the late Eddie Gilchrist and Caroline Rainey Gilchrist welcomed their sixth child, a son, Raleigh Mack Gilchrist, Sr. into the world. After a brief illness, he transitioned from this earthly life during the early morning hours on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at his home in Littleton, North Carolina.
During his early life, he professed faith in Jesus Christ, was baptized, and became a faithful member of the Roanoke Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. His formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System.
Raleigh was reared in a home by parents who instilled in him the importance of a strong work ethic. At a young age, Raleigh joined his older brothers and became employed at West Brothers Logging, Lindsay Harris Chipping Company, Rabbitt Bottom Logging, and Johnny Mac Coleman Logging. He retired after more than forty years of dedicated service to the industry.
On November 27, 1966, he was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Rosa Mae Johnson. This union was blessed with three children. An infant daughter, Rosa Renee, preceded him in death.
His most memorable pastimes were spent filled with laughter among close friends, telling jokes, watching westerns and reminiscing with family about old times.
In addition to his parents and daughter, he was also preceded in death by his siblings, Johnny Gilchrist, Sam Gilchrist, Lucille G. Williams, Mary Elizabeth G. Fleming, and Carolyn G. Richardson.
Those remaining to keep his legacies alive, philosophies challenged, and fond memories cherished are his sons, Bernard D. Gilchrist of Raleigh, NC, and Raleigh Gilchrist, Jr. of Roanoke, VA; his stepdaughter, Helen Johnson-Parker (Bernis) of Norfolk, VA; the mother of his children, Rosa Mae Gilchrist of Littleton, NC; two step-grandchildren, Akilah and Bakari Parker of Norfolk, VA; his loving sister, Olivia E. Gilchrist of Littleton, NC; a caring dedicated nephew who was like a son to him, Carlton Gilchrist of Littleton, NC; a special loving niece who was reared in the home during her earlier years, Lillie Daniels (Willie) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Gilchrist of Paterson, NJ; one brother-in-law, Branch O. Richardson of Vaughan, NC; his close dearest friends, Charlie Lee Fields, Howard Mills, James Harvey and William Mack Johnston; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at the Roanoke Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Littleton, NC. The Pastor, Rev. Timothy Edwards will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 P.M. on Friday, May 1, 2015.
