Mattie Alston Johnson

Mrs. Mattie Alston Johnson, daughter of the late Aaron Alston and Mary Eliza Kearney Alston, began life’s journey on February 15, 1909, in Warren County, North Carolina. She answered the Master’s call to eternal rest on Monday evening, January 25, 2016, in the serenity of her home in Littleton, North Carolina, at the age of one hundred and six years.

Being reared in a Christian home, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age, was baptized, and joined the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, under the leadership of the Pastor, Rev. Westly Shaw. She remained its longest living member with over ninety-eight years of membership. Her formal education was received in the Warren County Public School System.

Mattie was united in Holy Matrimony to Acie Johnson, Sr., who preceded her in death. Their union was blessed with seven children. Having been instilled with a strong work ethic, she perfected the skill of domestic work. She was affectionately known as “Ms. Mattie” to the many families for whom she labored through the years. She prepared and always kept a stable, loving home for her children and grandchildren.

She enjoyed gardening and cooking, and if you ever visited her home, you could not leave without having something to eat. She believed in treating everyone with respect and often offered a kind word to anyone with whom she came into contact. She always attributed her longevity to her profound values, strength of moral character, and steadfast faith in God.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her six sons, McKinley Johnson, Willis Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, twins Acie, Jr. and Archie Johnson, and William Ernest Johnson; one granddaughter, Rosa Renee; her siblings, Lizzie Alston, Roosevelt Alston, Willis Alston, and Gid Alston.

Those remaining to forever celebrate her legacy and treasure the many wonderful memories of her life and love are her devoted daughter, Rosa M. Gilchrist of the home; her grandchildren, whom she reared for numerous years, Helen J. Parker (Bernis) of Norfolk, VA, Bernard D. Gilchrist of Wake Forest, NC, Raleigh Gilchrist, Jr. of Roanoke, VA, Larry Whitaker (Monique) of Rocky Mount, NC, Asa Whitaker of Tillery, NC, Belinda Henderson and Nelson Rice of Littleton, NC, and Vincent Rice of Sharpsburg, NC; her great-grandchildren, Akilah, Bakari, Jacques, Alexis, K’Veon, Lariq, Malik, Larry, Jr., Brianna, and Quinshyra; her great-great-grandchildren, Zynchez and Da’King; her nieces, Pearlie McWilliams, Francis Alston, and Shirley Alston all of Littleton, NC, Vickie Fields (Joe) of Henrico, NC, Beaulah Hawkins of Petersburg, VA, and Bessie Brown of Fayetteville, NC; her nephews, Cleveland Alston and James Lee Taylor of Littleton, NC; and a host of other great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Saturday, January 30, 2016, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, 215 US Highway, Littleton, NC. Rev. Dr. Vernon Bryant will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, 43 Stansbury Road, Littleton, NC.
