Mary Lucille Garner Jones

The earthly life of MARY LUCILLE GARNER JONES began on April 7, 1928, in Northampton County, North Carolina. She was born to the late Leslie Garner and Emma Hilliard Garner. She answered God’s call to eternal rest and peace on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Samaritan Hospice, Virtua Hospital, Mt. Holly, New Jersey.

Mary accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and became a member of the Cool Spring Baptist Church in Gaston, North Carolina. She later joined the House of Prayer Church of God in Christ in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, where she served as a mentor, sister, usher, mother, and prayer warrior. Her door was always opened to the neighborhood. She had a heart of gold and a smile that would light up a room. Her motto was, “If I can help somebody as I pass along the way, then my living will not be in vain.”

Mary was united in Holy matrimony to William H. Jones, Jr., who preceded her in death. From this union, they enjoyed the blessing of six children. She was a kind, loving wife and mother who had a strong, positive impact on the lives of her family.

“Mother Jones” held many jobs, but the one she cherished the most was when she became employed in school food service at Roanoke Rapids High School in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

As her health began to fail, “Mother Jones” relocated to Willingboro, New Jersey, where she was lovingly cared for by her devoted daughter, Virginia “Ginny” and caring son-in-law, John. There were many wonderful days of cookouts, teaching, laughing, and good cooking, especially when HER recipe for Brunswick stew was used.

“Mother Jones” became a watch care member at Beauty Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Trenton, New Jersey, under the leadership of Elder Clemson Leach. She enjoyed praising God, baking cakes, pies, homemade rolls, and made the best chicken and dumplings you could ever eat.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her son, William H. “Willie” Jones, III;  her daughter, Eunice Jones Avent; her brothers, Lee Garner, Tom Garner, James Garner, John Garner, Clyde Garner, Charlie Garner, and Leslie Garner, Jr.;  her sisters, Rosa Lambert, Elizabeth Garner, Roxy “Sallie” Byrd, and Ola Mae Fleming.

Those remaining to forever memorialize her precious life and share the legacy of her love and sweet spirit are her daughters, Connie Hawkins (Shirley) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Rosa Squire of Brooklyn, NY, and Virginia “Ginny” Whittington (John) of Willingboro, NJ; her  son, Robin Jones (Renee) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a grandson who was like a son, Derrick Jones of Willingboro, NJ; ten other grandchildren, Angela Hawkins, Shawn Hawkins, Mario Hawkins, Tyesha Edwards, Cory Jones, Tina Harrison, Tyshica McClain, Stacy Squire, Kimberly Squire, and Robin Jones, Jr.;  fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lilly Garner of Roanoke Rapids, NC; five sisters- in-law, Dora Garner and Laura Putney both  of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Ethel Williams (Noah) of Trenton, NJ, and Nancy Garner and Minnie Garner both of Maryland; two brothers-in-law, Charles Jones and Marvin Jones of Trenton, NJ; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, September 29, 2017, at the First Baptist Church, 250 Webb Hill, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Elder Clemson Leach will eulogize, and burial will follow in the Crestview Memorial Cemetery, 489 Smith Church Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC. The body will repose at the church for two hours prior to the funeral time.
