MARTHA LUCILLE BROOKS BUSH transitioned from her labor to reward in the presence of her family on Sunday, May 3, 2020, at her home in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. She was born to the late Levi Brooks and Flora Hicks Brooks on April 10, 1927, in Gaston, North Carolina.
Martha, affectionately known as, “Martha Lou” and “Aunt Martha”, professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined the Gaston Baptist Church in Gaston, North Carolina, during her early youth. After completing her high school education, she relocated to Long Island, New York, and
began employment as the first Executive Assistant for Sternberg Furniture Company where she remained until her retirement.
While in New York, Martha met and married the love of her life, the late Rivers Dolphus Bush, on September 23, 1950. After retirement, Martha and Rivers moved to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, where they made their home, and she resided until her earthly departure.
Martha joined the Oak Grove Promised Land Ministries, faithfully attended worship services, and served as a dedicated member of the hospitality committee.
Along with her husband and parents, Martha was preceded in death by her oldest sister, Annie Lee O’Farrow; her nephew, Walter Daniel; her niece, Florine Burnette Jarrell; her great-nephew, Charlie R. Burnette, Jr., and her brother-in-law, Charlie L. Burnette.
Those remaining to forever cherish the unconditional love that Martha shared are her devoted sister, Iona E. Burnette of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her nephew, Charlie Ray Burnette of the home; her nieces, Marilynn Walls (Bertram) of Delray Beach, FL, Viola Harris (Mike) of Williamsburg, VA, Linda Kearney of Capital heights, MD, Joan Ivey of Hampton, VA, Kathy Powell (Ricky) of Brandywine, MD, and Peggy Daniel of Morehead City, NC; one brother-in-law, Jonathan Bush of Plant City, FL; six sisters-in-law, Verna Johnson of Statesboro, GA, Ollie Jean Reaves of Plant City, FL, Bernice Taylor, Dardell Baldwin, Rose Lee Saunders, and Earline Smith all of Lakeland, FL; eighteen great-nieces, eleven great-nephews, four great-great-nieces, and three great-great-nephews; her extended family friends, Hazel Mills, Lois Burnette, Jessie Burnette, Horace Burnette (Mavis) and John Henry Burnette (Mary Frances); her loyal caregivers, her niece, Tawanna Burnette, and Clara “Bea” Alston; and a host of other relatives, church family members and friends.
Martha was dearly loved my many. Her gentle, loving spirit will be long remembered and truly missed.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, May 8, 2020, at the Burnette Family Cemetery, 5681 Thelma Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Her Pastor, Rev. Dr. C.E. McCollum, will deliver the eulogy. Because of Covid-19, guidelines will be followed for all services by limiting the number of persons in attendance. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 7, 2020, from 3:00 – 5:00 P.M. Only five persons will be allowed to enter at any one time.
