Margaret Emma Webb Powell, the eighth of the twelve children of the late Wilbert Gilbert Webb and Josephine McCoy Webb, was born on August 7, 1940, in Halifax County, North Carolina. She departed this earthly life on Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at her home in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
During her early life, she confessed faith in Jesus Christ and joined the London Missionary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
Margaret’s formal education was received in the public school system of Halifax County, and she graduated from the former John Armstrong Chaloner High School with the class of 1960. After graduation, she relocated to New York City and attended Brooklyn College. She became a dedicated educator and retired from the New York City Board of Education in 2000, after twenty-three years of loyal service. She touched the lives of many and was a true advocate for numerous children and adults. For more than seventeen years, Margaret fostered many children and eventually adopted three of those children. In early 2000, she was chosen by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority to become a Golden Pearl for her outstanding community service, dedication, and commitment to others.
Margaret had a passion for sewing, reading, arts and crafts, cooking. She especially enjoyed cooking Sunday dinners to share with her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Queen Ester; and four brothers, Clyde, Jr, Richard C, Woodrow W., and George L.
Those left to forever treasure the precious memory of her life and share the legacy of her love are her three daughters, Magarite Williams and Marie Pittman Francis (Michael) all of Brooklyn, NY, and Renee Pittman of New York, New York; six sons, Joseph Williams and Marc Pittman of Roanoke Rapids, NC, James Williams of Richmond, VA, and Jeffery, Bernard, and Toby Powell all of the home; her grandchildren, Zola, Karima, Khalil, Titiauna, Dennis, Roumeal, Rory, Joseph, Denzell, Javian, Tatyana, Danielle, Terrance, Joseph, Adam, Priest, James, Granger, Michelle, and Nicole; her great-grandchildren, Khalil, Denzell, Jr., Jayden, Zy-Keriah, Jahsiem, Joseph, Jaceon, Josyiah, and Ky-Marla; two sisters, Mary E. Meyers of Brooklyn, NY, and Clara Underdue (Ben) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four brothers, Charles Webb of Philadelphia, PA, Clifton Webb and Tyrone Webb of Richmond, VA, and Job Wayne Webb (Diane) of Nicole, SC; one aunt, Bertha Whittle of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, in the chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Elbert Lee will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, before the ceremony.
