JOE EDWARD DOWTIN, son of the late Willie Dowtin and O’Lillian Jones Dowtin, was born on July 1, 1945, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He peacefully entered into eternal rest and peace on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
During his early years, Joe became a member of the Shearins Chapel Baptist Church in the Dowtin Town Community of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He received his formal education in the Halifax County Public School System and was a graduate of the former John Armstrong Chaloner High School in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, with the class of 1963. He then attended the Armstrong Vocational School and became a licensed barber. He was also employed for thirty-three years with the Washington, DC District Government as a Substance Abuse Counselor. His greatest joy was driving a DC cab, District #243, for over fifty years, where he will be fondly remembered for his polite and friendly service.
Joe lived most of his life in Prince George’s County, Maryland, but after retirement, he relocated to Martinsburg, West Virginia. He enjoyed traveling with his family on various cruises all over the world, cooking for his family, yard work, caring for the family dog, Diamond, and coming home to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, to visit family and friends. He was a diehard Redskins fan and would often be seen sporting his team’s favorite colors, Burgundy and Gold.
On August 17, 1963, Joe married his high school sweetheart, Alice Marie Edwards, and they shared fifty-three years in a loving marriage before she preceded him in death in August 2016. They are now back together again, and Oh, what a Glorious reunion! God blessed this union with two beautiful children, Carlos and Chaya. Joe was a hard and dedicated worker who faithfully provided for his family who was the joy and center of his world.
Those remaining to forever treasure the precious moments shared and to memorialize the legacy of his life and love are his devoted son, Carlos E. Dowtin (Griselda); his loving daughter, Chaya J. Dowtin; a dedicated grandson whom he reared and loved dearly, Larrell Perry; a precious granddaughter, Raven Callazo; four caring sisters, Margie Jarrell and Carolyn Dowtin of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Alice Settles (Theodore) of Washington, DC, and Cynthia Pellham (Frank) of Suitland, MD; two loyal brothers, Ronald Dowtin (Marie) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Jimmy Dowtin (Cathy) of Mitchellville, MD; another sister-in-law, Alma Jean Jones of Wilson, NC; one aunt, Mildred Dowtin of Roanoke Rapids, NC; two best friends, Rev. Milton Jones of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Lemuel Reynolds of Washington, DC; four godchildren, Jasmine and Jamal Grant of Oxon Hill, MD, Kiva Dowtin of Atlanta, GA, and Trecia Jarrell of Gaston, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Littleton, NC. Rev. Milton Jones will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The body will repose at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
