JESSE EUGENE TOWNES was born to the late Jesse Gene Townes and Arrie Phipps Townes on July 2, 1953, in Halifax County, North Carolina. He transitioned from this earthly life on Thursday, January 18, 2018, at Highland Hospital in Oakland, California.
During his early life, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, was baptized, and became a member of the Fidelity Baptist Church in the Summit Community of Littleton, North Carolina. Being reared in a Christian environment, he attended Sunday school and worship services and possessed a clear, well-defined perception of steadfast faith and belief in God.
Jesse’s formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System, and he graduated with honors from Northwest Halifax High School at William R. Davie with the class of 1971. He then furthered his education at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology in 1975, and his Master of Science Degree in Biology in 1977. While at NCCU he joined the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, never departed from the foundation of its purpose, and proudly wore that “Black and Gold”. After receiving his Master’s Degree, he taught General biology at NCCU, and was a Nature Specialist instructor at the Durham Recreation Department.
In his quest to venture further in the educational realm, Jesse entered the University of California at Berkley to pursue his doctorate degree. After relocating to Oakland, California, he continued to establish himself in the world of learning by attending Laney College where he received certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician in 1980, attained an Associate in Arts in Management and Supervision in 1981, and an Associate in Arts in Accounting in 1984. He became employed as a Salesman and Inventory Manager at Madsen Agency in San Francisco, and a Staff Clerk at Pacific Telephone Company. When the company divested, the name changed to Pacific Bell Directory and later to AT&T. Jesse was a Sales Assignment Control Supervisor, an Advertising Sales Associate, and a Quality Assurance Supervisor at Pacific Bell Directory, and also became an Advertising Sales Associate and Administrative Support Supervisor at AT&T where he retired on February 12, 2010, after thirty-two years of dedicated loyal service.
Jesse enjoyed spending time with family and friends when he came home on his annual visits. He enjoyed cooking and inviting the neighbors to come and share the scrumptious meals he prepared. He also loved to dine with his special friends at The Hunan, his favorite local Chinese restaurant. His hearty laughter was always welcoming and warm.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James “Hickey” Phipps; and his nephew, Edward Louis “KC” Phipps.
Treasured memories of his life will forever remain in the hearts of his caring aunt, Mary Phipps Tabron of Littleton, NC; his sister-in-law, Estelle R. Phipps of Littleton, NC; his four nephews, Franklin E. Phipps (Shelley), Randy M. Phipps, and Kenneth G. Phipps all of Littleton, NC, and Leonard M. Taylor (Fredah) of Corona, NY; his devoted cousin and caretaker, Carlton Jefferies of Oakland, CA; his best friend, big “Sister”, and long-time co-worker, Bernice Waller of Richmond, CA, who has been an integral part of his life since his arrival in California; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 4, 2018, at the Fidelity Baptist Church in Littleton, NC. The Pastor, Rev. John R. Rooks, will eulogize, and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
