DEACON JEROME JOHNSON answered God’s call to eternal rest and peace on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at his home in Hampton, Virginia. He was born to the late John Johnson, Sr. and Mamie Rice Johnson Goins on July 25, 1947, in Halifax County, North Carolina, and was the seventh of ten children.
Jerome accepted Jesus Christ early in his life, became an active member of the Fidelity Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, and served as a Deacon. He remained faithful even after relocating to Virginia, where he later joined First United Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia, and served as a Deacon and Trustee until his health began to decline.
Jerome learned the value of hard work at a very young age. It was important to him to be able to provide for himself and his family, so for many years, he worked two jobs to accomplish his goals. He started out working on the family farm and later became employed at Crawley Service Station in Littleton, North Carolina, and the former J. P. Stevens Industries in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. After relocating to Virginia, he obtained employment as a Fabricator and later a Crane Lift Operator at Newport News Shipbuilding. He also worked as an Auto Mechanic with Pep Boys and retired after twenty years of loyal service. He remained at Newport News Shipbuilding for forty-one years and received recognition for maintaining safe working conditions and was considered a Master of his craft.
Outside of work, Jerome loved to stay busy. He had a passion for repairing cars and would often do repair work for others during his spare time. He was very family oriented and would not miss a family gathering. His teasing nature and hearty laughter will be forever remembered.
In addition to his parents, Jerome was preceded in death by four brothers, Alonzo and Alfonso Johnson, John Johnson, Jr., and Christopher Johnson; two sisters, Gwendolyn Tabron and Miriam Johnson.
Those loved ones remaining to treasure the memories of his life and love are his two children, Jovonne Taborn (Kedian) of Charlotte, NC, and Brandon Johnson of the home; six grandchildren, Kaiden and Naomi Taborn, Kyamora Johnson, Sianna Peterson, Jeremiah Johnson, and Lashelle Johnson; two sisters, Addie Johnson Ford of Littleton, NC, and Yvonne Johnson Arrington of Hampton, VA; one brother, Paul Johnson of Littleton, NC; one brother-in-law, Bernard Arrington; two sisters-in-law, Betty Jean Johnson and Evelyn Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, February 7, 2020, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, 215 US Highway 158, Littleton, NC. Rev. Richard L. Battle will officiate, and burial will follow in the Johnson Family Cemetery, Roper Springs Road, Littleton, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home on Thursday, February 6, 2020, from 1:00 -8:30 P.M., with the family receiving friends from 7:00 – 8:00 P.M.
