Henry Lee “Hennie” Whittle

HENRY LEE “HENNIE” WHITTLE, son of the late Pearlie Whittle, Sr. and Bertha McCoy Whittle, was born on August 3, 1946, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at his home in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, surrounded by his loving family.

During his early life, Henry accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and became a lifetime member of the Simmons Grove Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, where he served as Chairman of the Trustee Board. His formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System, and he graduated from the former John Armstrong Chaloner High School in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, with the class of 1964. His career path then led him from Roanoke Rapids to the United States Army in 1965, where he served his country for four years with a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. After returning to North Carolina, he became employed with the Norfolk Shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia.

Henry’s law enforcement career began as a Police Sergeant in Scotland Neck, North Carolina, Chief of Police for Garysburg, North Carolina, from 1978 – 1986, and Deputy Sheriff and Investigator for the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. He remained in law enforcement until his retirement in 1993, and in 1998, he became a candidate for the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Henry was a member of the Enfield National Corvette Association. He was a competitive car show enthusiast, traveled the Eastern Car Show Circuit, and won numerous trophies. He also served faithfully in the Twin City Golfers Association for many years.

Henry was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Martha Smith. He graciously accepted the role as “Dad” for Christel, Lanora, and Erik. Prior to this union, he was the Dad of Ronnie. God blessed him to be “Granddaddy” and “Grandpa” to Shacona, Brittney, Derik, Allana, Adreanna, LaRen, Calvin, Jona’, Serenity, Leelyn, and Jayden. His six great- grandchildren lovingly called him, “Papa”.

Henry’s life and the legacy of his love will be forever treasured by his devoted wife and best friend, Martha S. Whittle; his children, Christel Evans (Jonathan), Lanora Washington, Erik Richardson, and Ronnie Price (Mary); eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his brothers, Paul Whittle, Pearlie Whittle, Jr. (Joyce), Larry Whittle (Sandra), and Darryl Whittle (Anna); his sisters, Ida Whittle, Carolyn Whittle Mayo, and Kathy Whittle Davis (Kenneth); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, October 8, 2018, at the Simmons Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 250 Huckleberry Bottom Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Evangelist Martha S. Whittle will deliver the eulogy, and entombment will follow in the Crestview Memorial Cemetery, 489 Smith Church Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC.  The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, NC, on Sunday, October 7, 2018, from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. The body may also be viewed at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
