GARRY DEWITT YELITY was born to the late Stephen Yelity and Martha “Ella” Pitchford Yelity on November 11, 1951, in Halifax County, North Carolina. God called his angel home on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.
During his early life, Garry accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and established membership with the Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina.
Garry’s formal education was received in the Halifax County Schools System, and he graduated from Northwest Halifax High School with the class of 1970. Following graduation, he joined the United States Navy and loyally served his country for twenty-two years. After retiring from the United States Navy, he became employed as Security Supervisor at Norfolk State University (NSU) in Norfolk, Virginia, and remained in this profession for ten years. While there, he implemented the “Spartan Patrol”, which currently provides a safe campus atmosphere for all university students. Because of his love for Norfolk State University, Garry was a devout contributor to the college’s “Honor Roll Donors”.
Garry was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans and was a fervent donor to the “Navy-Marine Corp Relief Society”, (NMCRS).
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Garry cherished providing for his family and sharing quality time with them. He loved spending his leisure time fishing, hunting, playing basketball, listening to music, playing the guitar, and honing his “Top Chef” culinary skills in the kitchen.
In addition to his parents, Garry was preceded in death by his two sisters, Vickie Yelity and Helen “Darlene” Yelity Williams.
Those remaining to forever celebrate his life and share the beautiful memories he left behind are his devoted wife, Eva Price Yelity of the home; his two daughters, Towanda Price of Roanoke Rapids, N C, and Ashley Yelity of Norfolk, VA; his granddaughter, Amari McDonald of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four sisters, Mary Smith (Leroy), Veronica Edmonds (Willie), Blanche Clanton, and Queenie Graham; one brother, Stephen Yelity (Susan); his aunt, Helen Ashe; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Carter; one brother-in-law, Joseph Price (Sandra), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, October 9, 2017, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, NC. Dr. Shelton Murphy will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in Littleton. The body will repose at the funeral home for two hours prior to the funeral time.
