Edward Cole Newell, Sr.

EDWARD COLE NEWELL, SR. was born to the late Ceasar  Newell and Inez Putney Newell on March 2, 1944, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He departed this earthly life and received his heavenly wings on Sunday, January 8, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

“Kanki” or “Ed”, as he was affectionately called, spent his entire life in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, where he received his formal education in the Halifax County Public School System, and became a member of the Simmons Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Edward was employed at West Point Stevens in Roanoke Rapids, for more than thirty years, and retired from the Town of Weldon after ten years of loyal service.

In 1969, Edward was united in marriage to the love of his life, the former Dorothy Boyd, who preceded him in death. God blessed this union with five children. He was a devoted husband and father who will always be remembered for his humbleness and quiet manner. He enjoyed gardening and hunting.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Jim, Robert, June, Cecil, Paul, Carl, and Charles Newell; and three sisters, Helen Jones, and Hazel and Irene Newell.

Those remaining to cherish his humble spirit and forever treasure each precious moment of his life and love are his son, Edward Cole Newell, Jr. (Latonya) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four daughters, Diane Williams (Keith) and Sherry and Sharonda Newell all of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Shaneika Caviness (Terrell) of Durham, NC; six grandchildren, Kiara and Shyheim Newell of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Teshawn Newell of Greenville, NC, Keith Jamar Williams, Jr. of Rocky Mount, NC, and Sharell and King Caviness of Durham, NC; his loving sister, Virginia Garner (Noble) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; eight sisters-in-law, Bernice, Mary, Helen, and Regina Newell, Bertha Jones (James), Edith Daniels, Shirley Battle (William), and Valencia Williams (Kenny); two brothers-in-law, James Boyd and Leroy Boyd (Diane); a special nephew, Thomas Jones; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at the Twilight Baptist Church in Weldon, NC. Rev. Melvin Davis will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Simmons Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 P.M. on Friday, January 13, 2017, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 – 7:00 P.M.
