Deacon Maryland King Hockaday, Sr.

DEACON MARYLAND KING HOCKADAY, SR. was born on December 5, 1937, in Warren County, North Carolina, to the late Lorenzo Hockaday and Getsy Hicks Hockaday, and went to his final resting place on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

During his early life, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and sought spiritual guidance at the Mt. Gilliam Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, where he served as a Deacon, taught Sunday school, and sang in the choir. He received his education in the Halifax County Public School System. In 1956, he became employed at the International Paper Company of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and later entered the health care profession, where he remained until his retirement after more than twenty years of devoted service.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life, the former Mary Coppedge, and God blessed this union with three daughters and one son. He was a hard- working, loving husband, and a dedicated father who put his faith and trust in God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Elder Willie G. Hockaday; his sister, Minnie B. Carter; and his grandson, William Lester Torain, Jr.

Those remaining to forever celebrate the fond memories of his life are his wife, Mary Hockaday of the home; three daughters, Trina Murphy, Josephine Torain (William) and Helen McPhail (Jeffrey) all of Littleton, NC; one son, Maryland King Hockaday, Jr. of the home; six grandchildren, Martina Mims (Tim), Angela Hockaday, Crystal McPhail, Jessica McPhail, Derrick Dowtin, and Thomas Torain; seven great-grandchildren, Adrienne, Ashli, Zyliah, Zyquan, Zaymareous, Zoey, and Dynasty; six sisters, Pearline J. Wilson of Chesapeake, VA, Josebell Williams of Greensboro, NC, Lorene Pitchford of Norfolk, VA, Betsy Baxter (Phil) of Virginia Beach, VA, Lucy Ann Powell of Norfolk, VA, and Helena Coley of Baltimore, MD; another brother-in-law, John W. Coppedge (Hattie) of Littleton, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends including two very devoted, loyal friends, Jack Saunders and Larry Jolly.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 25, 2015, in the chapel. His Pastor, Rev. John R. Rooks, will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Hockaday Family Cemetery, Bacon Road, Littleton, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 P.M. on Saturday, January 24, 2015.
