Alice Marie Edwards Dowtin

The Life of Alice Marie Edwards-Dowtin

On April 28, 1947, God graced the world with a precious baby girl, ALICE MARIE EDWARDS She was born to the late Jennie M. Edwards-Hubbert and was reared by the late Alverta Blackwell and Willie “Buck” Blackwell.

Alice accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Carter’s Chapel Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.  Her formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System and Prince Georges County Schools in Lanham, Maryland.

In August of 1963, Alice married her high school sweetheart, Joe E. Dowtin. They made their home in Washington, DC, and from this union, two precious children were born.

Alice was employed at the University of Maryland, College Park, for a tenure of thirty-four years. She loved her job, and many students adopted her as a second mom. Alice met many people and had lots of friends, “young and old”, and was highly regarded and respected by all of the University Community.

After retiring in August 1997, Alice and Joe traveled with family members on cruises all over the world. They enjoyed themselves tremendously, and these were very special and memorable times for her. During the last few years, after failing health prevailed, Alice had to remain closer to home. However, she always kept her praise, her faith, and her hope in God Almighty because she knew from whence came her help.

Alice was very affectionate and would often express her affection to her family, friends, and loved ones through poems, cards, letters, and words of encouragement.

Alice completed her earthly journey, and God sent an angel for her on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Maryland.

In addition to her mother and godparents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Earline Dinkins; and her two brothers, Alvin and William Edward.

Those left to forever cherish the everlasting memory of her life and legacy are her loving husband of fifty-three years, Joe E. Dowtin of the home; her beloved son, Carlos E. Dowtin; her adoring daughter, Chaya J. Dowtin; and her precious grandson whom she loved with all of her heart, Larrell C. Perry, all of Martinsburg, WV; her sister, Alma J.
