Deaconess Virginia Alston Hawkins

During the early morning hours of Thursday, August 18, 2016, Deaconess Virginia Alston Hawkins, transitioned to her home in glory at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson, North Carolina. She was born to the late Caroline Alston on March 24, 1926, in Warren County, North Carolina.

Virginia grew up in Littleton, North Carolina, and graduated from Warren County Training School in Wise, North Carolina. She was baptized at an early age and became a member of the Pleasant Zion Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. In the early eighties, she transferred her membership to the Olive Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, to serve with her family. She was dutiful in many capacities at both churches including Senior Choir, Deaconess Board, Sunday School Teacher, Church Clerk, and Pastor’s Aide Ministry.

Virginia was united in Holy Matrimony to Charlie Hawkins, Jr. God blessed this union with five children. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother whose gentle spirit, inspirational strength, and loving heart will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Over the years, Virginia used her special God-given gifts to relate to all people she encountered. She loved reading, reciting poetry, and ensuring the safety of residents in our local nursing homes. She became employed as an Apparel Inspector at the former Jay-Too Manufacturing Company in Littleton, North Carolina, and retired after many years of dedicated service.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Norma D. Hawkins Moore; her four brothers, Roger, Robert “Daniel”, Otis, and Charlie L. “Nat” Alston; and her three sisters, Emma A. Scott, Nannie A. Hamilton, and Grace A. Carter.

Those remaining to forever treasure the beautiful memories of her life and to share the legacy of her love are her devoted husband of sixty-nine years, Charlie Hawkins, Jr. of the home; her four sons, Charles D. Hawkins and John H. Hawkins (Carolyn) of Littleton, NC, all of Littleton, NC, Stanley M. Hawkins (Toby) of Louisburg, NC, and Barry M. Hawkins (Miyako) of Japan; her twelve grandchildren, Ron, Anthony (Jomesha), Cedric (Alicia), Shanesha, Sean (Lumiere), Ian, Barry, Jr., Garrett, Hunter, Savanna, Jaime, and Alia; her eight great-grandchildren, Ron, Branden, Taylor, Eli, Ethan, Joyous, Canah, and Laila; one great-great-grandchild, Makaio; her brother-in-law, Fred Carter of Littleton, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at the Olive Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Littleton, NC. The Pastor, Rev. Charles E. Walton, will eulogize, and Rev. Eddie W. Lawrence, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 P.M on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, and at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
