Virgie Marie Cheek Williams, the daughter of the late Charles Lee Cheek and Mollie Clanton Cheek, was born on September 4, 1922, in Warren County, North Carolina, and departed this earthly life on April, 22, 2017, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Virgie was the third of four children and was preceded in death by all of her siblings; Julius Cheek, Joseph Cheek, and Ida Cheek Moore.
Virgie accepted Christ into her life at an early age and joined Little Zion Baptist Church, where she remained a loyal member.
Virgie attended John R. Hawkins High School in Warrenton, North Carolina, and continued her education at Fayetteville State Teachers College in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Upon graduation from college, Virgie became employed in Warren County, then Wake County Schools. She retired from teaching in 1985, from Governor Morehead School for the Blind after having served North Carolina schools for 30 years.
As a lifelong learner, she was a natural teacher with a love for learning. She was an avid reader, loved books of all kinds, and also enjoyed writing, whether it was a simple thank you note or a letter. She loved her flowers, gardening, baking, sewing, and listening to music. She adored her grandchildren and great-grand children, was always glad to have visitors in her home, and tried hard to make them feel welcome.
Virgie married Herbert Williams of Arcola, North Carolina, and to this union they were blessed with five children. She had a loving spirit with a firm and guiding hand like the shepherd she served all her life. She will be deeply missed as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin, aunt, colleague and friend.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories, her loving husband of sixty-three years, Herbert Williams; four daughters, Cynthia Hinton (Andre), Ida Harshaw (LeGrant), Ramona Porter (Tommie), and Adriene Williams (Joseph Jenkins); one son, Herbert Williams (Joan); two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mable Cheek and Mrs. Lemira Barbee; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a special family, the Donaldsons; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at twelve o’clock noon on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in the Arcola Community of Warrenton, North Carolina. Herbert Antonio Williams will eulogize, and Pastor Kenneth Richardson will preside. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
