Viola Mariah “Sis. Rea” Carter Powell

Viola Mariah “Sis Rea” Carter Powell, one of the five children of the late Teete Carter and Ella Vincent Carter, was born on July 7, 1924, in Warren County, North Carolina, and transitioned from this earthly home to her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at Mariah Parham Medical Center in Henderson, North Carolina.

During her early life, she professed faith in Christ, was baptized, and became a devoted member of the Pleasant Zion Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. She faithfully served as a Trustee, the Church Treasurer, and a member of the Usher Board, Missionary Board, and Sunday School. She remained dedicated to her church and its worship until ill health prevailed.

Viola was educated in the Warren County Public School System in Warrenton, North Carolina, and graduated from the former John R. Hawkins High School in Warrenton, North Carolina. She was employed by Jay-Too in Littleton, North Carolina, and also Carolina Sportswear in Warrenton, North Carolina.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William McKinley Powell; three daughters, Frances Louise Powell, Mary Helen Fitts, and Theresa Gilchrist; her brothers, James A. Carter and Charlie Carter; and her sisters, Mary E. Gundy and Dorothy “Doll” Carter.

Those remaining to forever treasure the precious memories of her life and love are her two sons, Rev. William T. Powell (Naomi) of Mitchellville, MD, and Ronnie M. Powell of Washington, DC; one daughter, Lawanda Jones (Stanley) of Durham, NC; her sister-in law, Nathalee Carter of Baltimore, MD; one brother-in-law, John Ray Powell, Sr. (Nettie) of Littleton, NC; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at the funeral home. Rev. William T. Powell will eulogize, and Rev. Altony Foote will officiate. Burial will follow in the Robinson Cemetery in Littleton, NC. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 14, 2016, from 6:00 -8:00 P.M.
