Shirley Jessie Pullen

Shirley Jessie Pullen answered God’s call to eternal rest and peace on Friday, June 12, 2015, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He was born to the late Jessie J. Pullen and Ida B. Lynch Pullen on September 2, 1939, in Halifax County, North Carolina.

During his early life, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and became a member of the Bear Swamp Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. He was a faithful member and attended regularly until failing health prevailed. His formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System.

Shirley was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Dorothy Arrington. God blessed this union with five children. He loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.

Shirley enjoyed gathering with his family and friends, and no one was a stranger to him. He loved everyone and always embraced a warm welcoming spirit that positively impacted the lives of people with whom he came into contact. He enjoyed farming, especially raising tobacco, was fond of his tractor, and took great pride in raising his vegetable gardens.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his three sisters, Grady Belle Pullen, Mary Ellen Louise Pullen Maillard, and Peggie L. Pullen Dew; four brothers, Samuel, Wiley, Otto, and Frank Pullen.

Treasured memories of his life and loving spirit will remain in the hearts of his wife of fifty-five years, Dorothy Arrington Pullen of the home; four sons, John, Freddie, Steven, and Timothy Pullen all of Enfield, NC; one daughter, Patricia Marie Pullen of the home; three granddaughters, Latonya and Latorya Arrington, and Tamika Squire of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mattie Pullen Purnell of Henderson, NC, Gloria Dean Pullen Johnson of New York, Lillie Mae Pullen Sheridan (Sammy) of Rocky Mount, NC, and Bessie Pullen Richardson (Tyrone) of Red Oak, NC; a nephew who was like a brother, Joe Pullen of Baltimore, MD; six sisters-in-law, Martha McDaniel (Henry) and Jennie Brown of Norfolk, VA, Lena Mae Pullen of Rocky Mount, NC, Irene Pullen and Bessie Davis of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Clara Hayes of New York; another brother-in-law, Joseph Arrington of Norfolk, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, in the chapel. Rev. Joseph Carter will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Bear Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Highway #48, Littleton, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 P.M. on Monday, June 15, 2015.
