Sallie Bet Coley was born on December 11, 1914, in Halifax County, North Carolina, and was the eldest of the five children of the late Jim Coley and Nannie Powell Coley. After a brief illness, she passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2015, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson, North Carolina, surrounded by her loving family.
Sallie assumed the “Big Sister” role following the death of her mother. She began attending Zion Hill Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, as a teenager and maintained a close relationship with the church until her death. As a young adult, she relocated to Montclair, New Jersey, to join family and friends who had earlier made the migration. She then became a devoted member of the Montclair Baptist Church.
Sallie loved to read, walk and bake, and continued these activities following her return to North Carolina. She was a font of wisdom on local history, particularly the histories of the Coley and Powell families.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bill, and her sisters, Nannie and Mabel.
Those remaining to forever treasure the precious memories of her life are her loving sister, Alice; two nieces, Njambi (Earl) and Cheryl; one nephew, Heaman Guy; and many relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held on Monday, February 9, 2015, from 11:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M. in the funeral home chapel.
