RUSSELL CHARLES ANDERSON was born to Russell Chauncey Anderson and Mary Hackett Anderson on March 20, 1924 ,in the borough of Manhattan, New York, and was the oldest of their three sons. He slept peacefully into eternal rest on Saturday, November 28, 2015, at his home in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
During his formative years, he moved with his family to Harlem, New York, where he attended school and graduated from Dewitt Clinton High School in the Bronx. He then enlisted in the United States Navy, served his country during World War II, and was honorably discharged.
Russel met a young woman named Serlena Carter. They were united in marriage and three children were born to this union. They later added two foster children to their family.
After the war, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1946, and was part of the Occupation of Japan. He earned his second honorable discharge from the service, returned home, and became employed with many different businesses. In the 1950’s, he became a conductor with the New York City Transit Authority. In 1956, he joined the New York City Transit Police Department and retired with the rank of Lieutenant in 1976, after twenty years of loyal dedicated service . Russell then went to work for a private security company until his retirement from that job in 1991. In 1997, he and his wife relocated to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, where he remained until his death.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Robert Lee and Kenneth Anderson; and his two sons, Carl and Claude Arline.
Those remaining to forever treasure the precious memory of his life and share the legacy of his love are his devoted wife of seventy-one years, Serlena of the home; his daughters, Pam Kinsey and Barbara Anderson; his son, Darryl Anderson (Karen) ; seven grandchildren, Bryan Kinsey (Bernice) of Queens, NY, Taya Lewis (Jerry) of Brooklyn, NY, Scott Anderson of Queens, NY, Keira Nahar (Kenny) of Sandy Springs, MD, Todd Anderson of Holmstead, FL, Brett Anderson of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Maia Kinsey of Queens, NY; eleven great-grandchildren, Kymani, Kamin, Kayla and Kalel Nahar, Elliott Robertson, Erin Kinsey, Breana Phillips, Chauncey and Ryan Anderson, and Egypt and Eshe’ Anderson; his sister-in-law, Hortense; his nieces, Earlene and Vida; and a host of other relatives and friends. May Russell’s memory be eternal.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at the funeral home. Rev. Sallie Twine will eulogize, and burial will follow in the Enon Baptist Church Cemetery in Littleton. The body will repose at the funeral home on Monday, December 7, 2015, until 8:30 P.M.
