Roxy “Sallie” Garner Byrd

On September 17, 1919, Roxy “Sallie” Garner Byrd was born in Northampton County, North Carolina, to the late Leslie Garner and Emma Hilliard Garner. She peacefully departed this earthly life and entered her Heavenly home on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

During her early life, she attended the Northampton County Public Schools. She was baptized at a young tender age and became a member of the Cool Spring Baptist Church in Gaston, North Carolina. She also worshiped at other churches in her community, including the Quankey Missionary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Roxy was united in Holy Matrimony to Acie Byrd, Sr., who preceded her in death. God blessed this union with four children. Two sons, Clarence and David, Sr. also predeceased her.  In addition to her parents, husband, and sons, she has now joined her step-son, Acie, Jr.; her step-daughter, Nancy J.; her brothers, Lee, Tom, James, John, Charlie, Clyde, and Leslie, Jr.;and her sisters, Ola Mae Fleming, Rosa Lambert, and Elizabeth Garner for a glorious reunion.

Treasured memories of her precious life and love will forever remain with her son, Glenn J. Byrd, and her daughter, Patricia A. Byrd of the home; her step-daughter, Shirley B. Scott (William) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her grandchildren, James E. Robinson, David L. Byrd, Jr., and Marquita Byrd; her great-grandchildren, David L. Byrd III, Kierriah C. Byrd, Cheyenne A. Byrd, and James and Derrick Robinson; eleven step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sisters, Lucille Jones and Lillie Garner; her sisters-in-law, Dora Garner, Minnie Garner, and Nancy Garner; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends who will all miss her greatly and always remember her determined spirit, her vision to inspire others, and the many words of wisdom she shared that will last a lifetime.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Quankey Missionary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The Pastor, Rev. Joseph L. Battle, will officiate, and burial will follow in the Byrd Family Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The body will repose at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
