Reverend Arthur Eugene Hill, Sr.

img132Rev. Arthur Eugene Hill, Sr. was born to the late James Everett Hill and Annie Murphy Hill on July 20, 1940, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He transitioned to his Heavenly home on Sunday, May 17, 2015, at Wake Medical Heart Care Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at an early age, was baptized, and became a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Duquesne, Pennsylvania.  His formal education was received in the public school system of Duquesne, Pennsylvania. He furthered his studies at Pace College in New York City, Washington Bible College in Lanham, Maryland, and Harvard University School of Business in Boston, Massachusetts.

He was licensed to preach by the Rehoboth Baptist Church in Washington, DC, under the pastorate of Rev. R. Vincent Palmer, III, and was ordained by the Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, under the pastorate of Rev. George E. Battle. Through the years, he served in various church capacities including Assistant Pastor, Youth Minister, Male Chorus member, Sunday School Teacher, Junior and Senior Deacon, former Men’s Fellowship Ministry, and the Sick and Visitation Ministry at Signature Health Care (Formerly Guardian Care) of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Professionally, “Rev. Art”, as he was fondly called, was blessed to have traveled extensively throughout South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. As a result, he was privileged to have learned Spanish and Portuguese. He was also well-known throughout the community for his preparation of cabbage, chicken and rice soup, and vegetable soup.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. Carl Hill.

Treasured memories of his life and loving spirit will remain in the hearts of his devoted wife, Shelia Hockaday-Hill of the home; his daughter, Shelby Lynn Hill of Temple Hill, MD; his son, Arthur Hill, Jr. (AJ) of Whiteville, NC; his children’s mother, Selena Graham of Whiteville, NC; one granddaughter, La Shiya Amora; three brothers, Everett Hill, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Warren Hill of Los Angeles, CA, and Willis Hill of Wilmington, DE; his mother-in-law, Mattie Hockaday-Brown of Roanoke Rapids, NC; one brother-in-law, Earl Hockaday, Sr. (Susie) of Alexandria, VA; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Blount (Terrence, Sr.) of Dumfries, VA, and Vickie Armstrong (Vernice) of Woodbridge, VA; his special nephews, Felix Nobles, Terrence Blount, Jr., and Earl Hockaday, Jr. (EJ); his special nieces, Deborah Richardson, Elder Myra Richardson, Tonya Hill, Bria Armstrong, and Crystal and Taylor Riley; his daughter of the heart, Tonja Palmer; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, May 22, 2015, at the Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Halifax, NC. The Pastor, Rev. Dr. C.E. McCollum, will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, May 21, 2015, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
