OTTRA “PEEWEE” NEWELL, son of the late Jim Newell and Mary A. Putney Newell, was born on October 18, 1946, in Halifax County, North Carolina. He answered God’s call to eternal rest and peace on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at his home in Littleton, North Carolina.
During his early life, he professed faith and belief in Jesus Christ and became a member of the Simmons Grove Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He served on the Usher Board, the Trustee Board, and remained faithful until his health began to decline.
His formal education was obtained in the Halifax County Public School System, and he graduated from the former John Armstrong Chaloner High School in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, with the class of 1964. He became employed with the Wonder Bread bakery in Washington, DC, and later with Halifax County Schools in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, where he retired after many years of loyal service.
In 1985, “Pee Wee” was united Holy Matrimony to the former Mablelean Bowser. They adored each other and enjoyed the years God allowed them to spend together. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, making people laugh, and taking care of his dogs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Winston Newell; his father and mother-in-law, William Henry and Pauline Bowser; three sisters-in-law, Elaine Burgess, Katherine Bowser, and Shanell Newell; one brother-in-law, Henry Bowser; and one niece, Sherry Bowser Lee.
Treasured memories of his precious life and legacy will forever remain with his wife, Mablelean Newell of the home; his children, Derrick Newell (Carolyn) and Octavius Newell all of New Carrollton, MD, Ebony Smith (Gerry) of Greensboro, NC, Jennifer Burgess (Dalawrence) of Skippers, VA, Lori Hunter (Brian) of Enfield, NC, and Crystal Burgess (Deandre) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his “Children of the heart”, Billy Moody, Jr., Keshauna Stone, and Janesia Hawkins; eight brothers, John Newell (Bessie), Woodrow Newell (Sharon), Jimmy Newell, Darnell Newell, Randall Newell (Sybil), Dwight Faulcon, Brian Newell, and Courtland Newell; six sisters, Justine Parrish (Joe), Connie Hawkins, Christine Jones, Janet Thurston, Dominique Thurston, and Missey Newell; four other brothers-in-law, Julian Bowser (Evelyn), Waverly Bowser (Elma), Willie Bowser (Sandra), and Linwood Bowser (Cassandra); three other sisters-in-law, Melissa Bowser, Kary Bowser, and Ida Mae Bowser; six aunts, Costena Putney, Margaret Sledge, Helen Newell, Bernice Newell, Mary Newell, and Virginia Garner; and a host of loving nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, including a very special devoted friend, Willie Lee Patterson, who was always there for him assisting with his care, transportation, and overall well-being.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, February 24, 2017, in the chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Melvin Davis will eulogize, and burial will follow in the Simmons Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 P.M. on Thursday, February 23, 2017, with the family receiving friends from 6:00-7:00 P.M.
