Nell Marie Johnson Alston was born on November 30, 1934, in Littleton, North Carolina, to the late Rev. George H. Johnson and Mary E. Johnson. She departed this earthly life on Saturday, September 22, 2018, in New Jersey.
Nell spent her childhood in her home state of North Carolina, where she married and had two children, Phyllis Gail and Audrey Faye. In 1960, she relocated to New Jersey and resided in the cities of Newark (Pennington Court) and East Orange. She joined the First Mount Zion Baptist Church and became an active member of the Usher Board.
Nell attended Essex County College and graduated with her Cosmetology License. For over the next thirty years, she brought smiles to many faces with her creative and professional hair styling. She also worked at the National Urban League.
Nell had a tremendous love for gardening and never missed an episode of Family Feud, Steve, Judge Judy, and WWE wrestling. Her passion for music led her to become an organist at Damascus Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Nell was preceded in death by her siblings, Viola Simpson, Coppin, Tylor, and Sterling Johnson, Olivia Sims, Annie Arrington, and Lillian Mebane.
Those remaining to forever treasure the precious memory of her life and love are her two daughters, Phyllis Roberson (Jesse) of Irvington, NJ, and Audrey Alston of East Orange, NJ; her grandchildren, Tiffany, Stacey (Patrick), JesCia’ (Nathan), Jesse Robertson, Jr., Omar, Jasmin, and Jade Alston; ten great-grandchildren; her sister, Lucille Williams of Raleigh, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at the Springfield Missionary Baptist Church, 1706 Wayman Church Road, Littleton, NC. The pastor, Rev. O.D. Sykes will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will repose at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
