MARY MAGGIELENE COPPEDGE HOCKADAY was born to the late Tommie Coppedge and Catherine Williams Coppedge on March 15, 1931, in Littleton, North Carolina. She answered God’s summon to her eternal home on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at her home in Littleton, North Carolina.
Mary was baptized during her early life and participated in many activities while attending the Enon Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. In later years, she became a faithful member of The Only Way Church of Christ in Vaughan, North Carolina, and also attended the Mt. Gilliam Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, until ill health prevailed. Her formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System.
In 1957, Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to Maryland K. Hockaday, who preceded her in death. God blessed this union with four children. She was a devoted wife and mother whose Christian values were unwavering in her strength of character and stabilizing force in her family.
Mary was employed at Jay Two Sports, Inc. in Littleton, North Carolina, and also rendered services as housekeeper and caregiver to the West Family for forty-five years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was also preceded in death by a grandson, William L. Torain, Jr.; her sister, Ida B. Coppedge; and one brother, James “Mack” Coppedge.
Treasured memories of her life and love will forever remain with her four children, Trina Murphy, Josephine Torain (William), Maryland K. Hockaday, Jr., and Helen McPhail (Jeffery) all of Littleton, NC; seven grandchildren, Martina Mims (Tim), Angela Hockaday, Crystal McPhail, Jessica McPhail (Patrice), Derrick Dowtin (Jasemine), Thomas Torain, and Charlotte Torain; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, John Walter Coppedge (Hattie) of Littleton, NC; six sisters-in-law, including Helen Coley, who comforted Mary in her last days of life; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 10, 2019, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, 215 US Highway 158, Littleton, NC. Rev. John R. Rooks will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Hockaday Family Cemetery, Bacon Road, Littleton, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home on Saturday, March 9, 2019, from 12:00 – 8:30 P.M., and the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
