Mary Elizabeth Brown Daniel, daughter of the late Hilliard Brown and Alvita Mayo Brown, was born on June 7, 1918, in Halifax County, North Carolina, and departed this earthly life on Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell, Virginia.
She joined the Carter’s Chapel Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, in 1943, and remained a faithful member until declining health prevailed. Her formal education was received in the public schools of Halifax County, North Carolina, and she graduated from the former John Armstrong Chaloner High School with the class of 1939.
In 1941, Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to Raleigh Daniel, who preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by her two sisters, Arlena B. Jones and Beatrice C. Scott; and her brother, Lynwood Brown.
Those remaining to forever treasure the precious memories of her love and wisdom are her two daughters, Arnita D. Williams (Michael) of Chester, VA, and Alvite D. Squire (Roy) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; one son, Dexter L. Daniel (Belinda) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four grandchildren, Michelle D. Daniel of Richmond, VA, Shmicka L. Squire-McQueen of Winston-Salem, NC, and Tromaine J. Daniel and Jermaine L. Daniel of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four great-grandchildren, Montrael, Quashe’, Quantez, and Jovania; three sisters, Annette Daniel of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Mary J. Daniel and Mable Daniel of New York; one brother-in-law, Earnest Daniel of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a special nephew, whom she raised as her own, Calvin C. Jones; three special cousins, Evelyn Burgess, Ida Robinson, and Hartense Padmore; a special friend, Catherine Pye of Weldon, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 5, 2014, in the chapel. Rev. John R. Rooks will eulogize, and burial will follow in the Mayo Family Cemetery, Thelma Road, Roanoke Rapids. The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 P.M. on Saturday, January 4, 2014.
