Mary Ann Jarrell Wilcox

MARY ANN “MARY” JARRELL WILCOX, daughter of the late Fuchia Jarrell and Dora Worley Jarrell, was born on June 27, 1922, in Halifax County, North Carolina. She answered God’s call to eternal rest and peace on Friday, March 24, 2017, at Hampton Manor Assisted Living in Gaston, North Carolina.

Her formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System. During her early life, she professed faith in Jesus Christ, was baptized at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, and served as a faithful member doing God’s work. She was a member of the Usher Board for more than twenty-six years and served as President for many of those years. Mary was an active Prayer Warrior and also served on the Missionary Board.

On November 29, 1942, Mary was united in marriage to Henry Wilcox, who preceded her in death. God blessed this union with seven children, two of which preceded her in death, Charles “Buck” Thomas Wilcox, survived by his wife, Alice Wilcox of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Lieutenant Colonel Buffie Donnell Wilcox (retired), survived by his wife. Patricia Brogdon-Wilcox of Fayetteville, NC, and her grandson, Charles Tony Wilcox, survived by his wife, Nelsie Wilcox of Jersey City, NJ.

Mary loved her family and worked extremely hard taking care of her children and grandchildren, as well as, other family members and friends. She was employed at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and retired after many years of loyal service. Even after retirement, Mary served others making sure she lived according to the word of God: “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” She was a member of the Good Samaritan Club and the Littleton Community Senior Citizens Organization, and was an instrumental fundraiser in establishing the Thelma Volunteer Fire Department. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling with her family and fishing with her good friend, the late Catherine “Lean” Caine.

Mary will be sorely missed because she touched so many hearts and enriched their lives by her kind and loving ways. Her sweet spirit lives today and forever more in the hearts of her brother, Willie Jarrell (Carolyn) of Roanoke Rapids, NC;  her children, Della Wilcox Ford of York, PA, Edith Wiggins (Jerole) of Richmond, VA, Leon Wilcox (Gladys) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Tonya Wilcox of Baltimore, MD, and Cornelia “Tee” Wilcox of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her grandchildren, Angela Mackell (Edwin), Shevonne Stanley (Quenton), Ulysesses Wilcox (LaShawn) all of Maryland, Steve Wilcox (Stephanie) of Littleton, NC, Levy Ford, III (Demeria) of Dover, PA, Taleesha Wilcox-Brown of Greensboro, NC, Jadyn Wilcox-Garner of the home, Sharonda Settles (Nathaniel) and Antwan Wilcox of Winston-Salem, NC; Kristie Green (Brian), Charletta Wilcox, Tonia Lashley and Stacy Phipps (Amy) all of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Arnetta Boyd (Donald), Phyllis Caine (Johnnie), Tamatha Faulcon (Marvin) and Alicia Lashley all of Littleton, NC, Patronya Brogdon of Atlanta, GA, and Nicola Anderson of Richmond, VA; thirty-five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a very special close friend, Nellie Taylor of Littleton, NC; three extended family members, Mike Williams (Sandra) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Roy Williams (Johnie)  of Bath, NC, and Lois W. Gurkin of Emporia, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Littleton, NC.  The pastor, Rev. Dr. Charles E. McCollum, will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Wilcox Family Cemetery, 6041 Thelma Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC.The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 PM on Friday, March 31, 2017, and the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
