Lutie Mariah Phipps Garner

Lutie Mariah Phipps Garner was born to the late Wiley Phipps and Laura Edmonds Phipps on March 17, 1936, in Littleton, North Carolina. She passed away at her home in Baltimore, Maryland, on Sunday, September 25, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

 

Being raised in the church, Lutie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior during her early life, and joined the Cornerstone Holy Church in Littleton, North Carolina. After relocating to Baltimore, Maryland, she spent her adult life as a member of the New David Baptist Church and   remained faithful for over fifty years. She was the epitome of a Proverbs 31 virtuous woman.

 

Lutie was educated in the Halifax County Public School System and graduated from the former McIver High School in Littleton, North Carolina, with the class of 1954. She began her career at John’s Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore as a nursing assistant. Her love for people and her dedicated service to others were constant in her life as she worked for over thirty years in the Baltimore City School System.

 

On November 8, 1958, she married the love of her life, David Garner, Jr. God blessed this union with two children, David Gerard and Sharon Denise. Lutie found great joy in being a devoted wife, a loving mother, a proud grandmother, a supportive sister, and a loyal friend.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four of her sibings, Robert Lee and Frank Phipps, Juanita Royster, and Mary Alston.

 

Those left with everlasting memories of her life and legacy are her loving husband, David Garner, Jr.; her two children, David (Kenia) and Sharon; four grandchildren, Stephen and Andre Matthews, Kourtney Garner and Samuel Seymore; one great-grandchild, Jamari Brown; her five siblings, Melvin Phipps, Endie Webb, Earlean Phipps, Georgianna Stovall, and Evelyn Wills; two sisters-in-law, Naomi Phipps and Celeste Brown (Gaither); one brother-in-law, Harold Garner (Doris); and a host of nieces, nephews, other family, and close friends.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, NC. Elder Frederick Williams will officiate, and burial will follow in the Phipps Family Cemetery in Littleton. A viewing will be held on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until the funeral time.
