JUNIUS “RED” HICKS, SR., peacefully departed this earthly life on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Signature Healthcare of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He was born on September 18, 1930, in Littleton, North Carolina, to the late Essex Junius Hicks and Ida Alston Hicks Patterson.
Under the stewardship of his mother, he joined the Pleasant Zion Baptist Church and attended regularly. Later in his adult years, he developed his own relationship with Jesus Christ and worshipped Him faithfully.
Junius,“Red”, as he was affectionately known, was educated in the Halifax County Public School System. At the age of fourteen, he started working to support his mother, sister, and brother. He was drafted into the United States Army, served his country proudly, and received an Honorable Discharge. He returned home to Littleton and began his long-distance truck driving career around the age of twenty-two. Known on the highways as “Big Red”, he drove all over the United States for more than forty-seven years.
On July 26, 1952, he was united in marriage to the former Catherine Parker. This union was blessed with six children. He was a devoted husband and father who believed in hard work and never departed from his strong foundation of drive and determination.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Leroy “Dooly” Hicks; his sister, Ellen Beatrice “Boot” Lynch Haynes; and his eldest son, Junius “Poolie” Hicks, Jr.
Treasured memories of his life will forever remain in the hearts of his wife of sixty-six years, Catherine Parker Hicks; his five children, Sandra Hopkins, Faye Nicholson, Robert Hicks, Dwight Hicks (Sharicka), and Keith Hicks (Prell Dean); twenty-four grandchildren; forty-four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Christine Edwards; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 21, 2018, in the chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Danny Jones will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Robinson Cemetery in Littleton, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home from 12:00 Noon – 8:30 P.M. on Friday, July 20, 2018.
