Jennie Mary Hockaday Jones

Jennie Mary Hockaday Jones, devoted Christian, loving wife, mother, sister and aunt, was born December 2, 1937, to the late John B. Hockaday and Susanna Martin Hockaday. She was the baby of 10 children. Jennie was called by the Lord, in exchange for a greater life and reward of everlasting peace, on December 18, 2018.

In 1955, 63 years ago, Jennie was united in holy matrimony to Charles W. Jones. Their union was blessed with four children: Charles “Chuck”, Victor, Sheila, and Brenda. In extending her family’s love, Charles and Jennie opened their hearts to welcome Jenee White Jones in 1992.

Jennie grew up in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. She accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized at Carters Chapel Baptist Church. After uniting with Charles, she joined Shearins Chapel Baptist Church. Later in life, she became a member of Central Baptist Church of Camp Springs, Maryland (Pastor Lincoln M. Burruss, Jr.), where she worshipped and served until her passing.

Jennie was educated in the Halifax County Public School System. After receiving her nursing license in 1960, she began working at Brown Nursing Home in Enfield, North Carolina. Soon after Charles and Jennie decided to move back to Washington, D.C., she began working for Alexandria Hospital, where she served as a nurse for 33 years. After a long and fruitful career, Jennie retired in 1995, but never stopped working; for the work of nursing and helping others was Jennie’s calling. She continued to provide nursing care for several years to many. One of her most recent joys was providing tender loving childcare services and doting over her grandsons, Kortland & Kenston, and her great-granddaughter, Karter.  She used her professional and personal skills to also care for Erick Alexander and Kenston Richardson, when they were in need of special medical attention.

In her pastime, Jennie also found great joy in working in the yard.  Passersby would often stop to offer compliments, or just to stop and talk with Miss Jennie. Jennie was kindness, goodness, and tenderness personified. Always giving of herself and her resources to her children, nieces/second daughters – Pearline Preston (Rip), Nellie White (A.P.), Delores Thompson (Rock), Queen Shade, and their brother Jesse Fleming (Shirley) – grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was unselfish with her love, time, attention, and words of encouragement and inspiration. Charles and Jennie were foster parents to over 20 children for nearly 15 years. Some of the children in their care continued sharing a bond extending past their time of placement.

Jennie was preceded in death by 6 brothers, 2 sisters (Jean Archie, Pearl Flemming); and grandchildren, Victor A. Jones II (Goo) and Erick R. Alexander II.

Cherishing the memory of Jennie are her husband, Charles W., Jennie’s children: Charles L. “Chuck” (Evangeline), Victor (Tonya), Sheila Brooks (Timothy), Brenda Richardson (Kentrell), and Jenee White Jones. One brother, Ralph Hockaday. Jennie’s grandchildren: Derrick (Lakisha), Rodney (Kia), Charles, Jarrod (Martina), Roger, Ronnie, Christina, Ryan, Jessica, Brionna, Jennifer “Chrissy” (Eric), Kortland and Kenston. Her great-grandchildren, Daylon, Charlie, Anthony, Kajah, Kamaria, Keila, Amari, Jacar, Bryan, Immanuel, King, Kali, Elijah and Karter. She leaves a host of other relatives, special neighbors and many friends whose lives she touched as a special mother figure and mentor.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, December 22, 2018, at the Shearins Chapel Baptist Church, 1892 Thelma Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Rev. Charles L. Jones will eulogize, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will repose at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
