Gertrude Mills Rainey was born on August 29, 1925 in Halifax County, NC, and was the eighth child born to the late Eddie Mills and Mary Brown Mills. Her earthly life’s journey came to an end on Saturday morning, April 18, 2015, at her home in Littleton, North Carolina, surrounded by her loved ones.
During her early life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, was baptized, and began her spiritual foundation at the Carters Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. She later changed her membership to join her husband at the Fidelity Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, where she served in many capacities.
Her formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System. She graduated in 1943, from the former McIver High School in Littleton, North Carolina, where she excelled in academics and the sport of basketball.
She met and married the love of her life, James ‘Waynee” Rainey, who preceded her in death. This union was blessed with six children. One daughter, Selma Rainey Marshall, also preceded her in death. She was a loving, kind-hearted, supportive, giving, and compassionate wife and mother. Her greatest joys were spending time with her family, fishing, watching sports, working in her vegetable garden, attending Fidelity Baptist Church, and being a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 425 in Littleton, North Carolina. She owned and operated the Summit Grocery Store and enjoyed the daily fellowship of the close-knit community patrons, and the different people who stopped in to socialize.
In addition to her parents, husband, and daughter, she was preceded in death by her two grandchildren, Kendall Hockaday and Jarrell Rainey; and her six siblings, Leola M. Taylor, James “Buddy” Mills, Marion Green Mills, Ruth M. Patterson, Annie M. Leonard, and Loubeth M. Phipps.
Treasured memories of her life and love will forever remain in the hearts and minds of her children, Joycelyn R. Harley, James Rainey, Jr. (Bessie), Arvis Rainey, Carlton Rainey, and Jeanetta R. Hockaday (Charles); sixteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sisters, Ida M. Robinson and Phenon M. Faulcon; her sisters-in-law, Naomi R. Phipps and Lois R. Price; a very special aunt, Elberta Snow; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends who will all miss her earthly presence.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 23, 2015, at Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, North Carolina. Rev. Dr. C. E.
