Fenollosa McNell Manley Cherry

Fenollosa McNell Manley Cherry was born to Rufus Manley and Emma Pullen Manley on May 27, 1933, in Halifax County, North Carolina. She was called by the Lord, in exchange for a greater life and reward of everlasting peace, on Monday, December 24, 2018, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Fenollosa received her formal education in the public schools of Halifax County and graduated from the former Eastman High School in Enfield, North Carolina.

She was united in holy matrimony to James Oliver Cherry in 1955, a union of the closest bond, which lasted fifty years until he preceded her in death in 2005. Their union was blessed with a son, James Quinton, who preceded her in death in 1983.

Fenollosa accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized at the Lebanon A.M.E.Church in Littleton, North Carolina. After uniting with James, she joined Zion Temple Baptist Church of Brooklyn, New York. Later in life, she and James relocated to Greensboro, North Carolina, and became members of the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Fenollosa was compassionate and selfless, devoting much of her time, energy, and resources to help care for her family members and those in need. Always one to speak the truth, family and friends often sought her out for her sage, yet straight forward advice. She served for many years as a hardworking and dedicated caretaker at United Cerebral Palsy in Brooklyn, New York, until her retirement in 1997.

Those left to cherish the precious memory of her life and to share the legacy of her love are her granddaughter, Felice Smith (Duane); her grandson, Daniel Lewis; her great-grandson, Jackson Smith; her daughter-in-law, Sara Martinez; her sisters, Mima Johnson of Littleton, NC, and Malettie Graham of Greensboro, NC; her sister-in-law, Alice Manley; her special nieces, Brenza Tabron and Moneca Allen; and a host of nephews, other nieces, cousins, relatives, and friends who will all miss her earthly presence.

Fenollosa will forever be remembered for her unwavering generosity, deep wisdom, sharp wit, and constant strength in the face of adversity.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 29, 2018, in the chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Dr. Cassandra Sparrow will deliver the eulogy, and entombment will follow at the Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral time.
