Etta Elnora Oliver Newell

newellEtta Elnora Oliver Newell, daughter of the late Julius and Elnora Oliver, was born on December 16, 1929, in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, and peacefully slipped into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, in the serenity of her home in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Etta graduated from high school in 1950, and received her degree from Nursing School in 1952.  One evening after Etta’s cousin picked her up after work, a tall dark and handsome man having car trouble caught their attention.  Since her cousin knew him, they stopped to give him a hand. The handsome man was introduced to Etta as Leroy Nelson Newell.  One day Etta was getting off work at the hospital and to her surprise Leroy, affectionately known as “Homer”, was in the parking lot waiting for her. Etta, affectionately known as “Tittot”, was joined in Holy Matrimony with Leroy in October 1954, and remained in this union until his untimely death in 2005.  God blessed their marriage with four wonderful children, three of whom preceded her in death: Nelson (1989), Esther Louise (2006), Earl Scott (2013).

In addition to her parents, husband, and three children, Etta was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Julius and Samuel Oliver; three sisters, Lila Hayes, Betty Wilson and Absellia Newsome; and  one grandchild, Tianisha Mills.

Etta was known for speaking her mind and telling it like it is!  She loved her family, would always welcome them to her home, and would give up her bed to make sure everybody was comfortable.  She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to joke around with everyone!  Etta will be deeply missed!

Those left to cherish her precious memory are her devoted son, William (Deloris) of Ahoskie, NC; one daughter-in-law, Marilyn Newell of Portsmouth, VA; one sister, Hattie Oliver of Queens, NY; one nephew,  Merriman Wilson (Deloris) of Baltimore, MD; three sisters-in-law, Alice Spratley (Jesse) of Virginia, Annie Pearl Newell of Queens, NY, and Dora Newell of Teaneck, NJ; one brother-in-law, Eddie Fitts of Littleton, NC; eight grandchildren, Dalton Newell (Pam), Kevin Mills, Donte Nelson Thomas, LaSherrie Newell , Tyesha Gillis (Jerry), Monica Smith (Ivey), Shannette Martin (Leon), and Kimberly Slade; seventeen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, May 30, 2014, in the funeral home chapel. Rev. James M. Johnson will eulogize, and burial will follow in the Alston-Newell Family Cemetery, highway #4, Littleton, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 P.M. on Thursday, May 29, 2014.
