Emma Jean Scott Sutton

Emma Jean Scott Sutton, daughter of the late Lloyd Green Scott, Sr. and Emma Jean Alston Scott, was born in Halifax County, North Carolina, on September 8, 1956. She departed this earthly life on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

Emma’s formal education was obtained through the public schools of Halifax County, North Carolina, and the public schools of Newark, New Jersey, where she graduated from Weequahic High School with the class of 1975.  She then attended Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey, and received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Sociology and Education. She was gainfully employed with the Providence School Department in Providence, Rhode Island, and also with various other institutions over the years in New Jersey and Rhode Island.

During her formative years, Emma professed her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ at the Pleasant Zion Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. Her devout service to the Lord continued at Maranatha Tabernacle Church of God in Providence, Rhode Island, where she was a faithful lead administrator of the children’s ministry for well over twenty years.

Early in her adult life, Emma met and married the love of her life, Stewart K. Sutton, and this union was blessed with two children, Kenneth and Vance.

Emma was truly a woman on the go. Whenever someone close to her was in need, there was no limit to the lengths she would go, as a God-fearing woman, to satisfy everyone and make them happy, especially children. She was a woman who treated all children with love and equality regardless of color, class, or creed. People knew that they could rely on her because she was a genuine woman of her word, and would honor it in truth, sincerity, and love. Each individual person was special to Emma, and she gladly devoted her time, attention and care. Everyone loved Emma, who was also affectionately called “Nook”, “Dolly Jean”, “Baby Girl”, and to her nieces and nephews, she was their favorite, “Aunt Nook”.

Submitting to the Will of God, Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Emma; her sisters, Elsie Scott Bulla, Barbara “Bunk” Artis, and Shirley Scott Boyd; and her brother, Willis Scott.

Her life and legacy shall remain as treasures in the hearts of her devoted husband, Stewart of the home; her children, Kenneth Stewart and Vance Lloyd; her loving siblings, Dorothy Simmons of Rocky Mount, NC, Sandra Alston of Littleton, NC, Margaret Wickham, Lloyd G. Scott, Jr, and Ronald Scott all of Brooklyn, NY, and Walter Alston of Washington, DC; her uncle, Louis “Brick” Scott of Littleton, NC, her nieces and nephews all of whom she shared a special bond; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends, who all loved her dearly and will miss her greatly.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, April 16, 2018, in the chapel of the funeral home. Rev. Robert L. Faulcon, Sr. will eulogize, and Bishop Lloyd T. Alston will officiate. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Littleton, NC.
