ELLIS LEE “BUD” MILLS, JR. was born on September 26, 1921, in Halifax County, North Carolina, to the late Ellis L. Mills, Sr. and Mamie Ashe Mills. He answered God’s call to eternal rest and peace on Sunday, July 23, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
During his early life, he professed his faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. His formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System where he attended the former Goldmine School in Littleton, North Carolina. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged. He then became employed in the farming industry and was a hard worker.
He was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Beulah Mae Harris and God blessed them with many years of marriage.
“Bud” was gentle and kind-spirited, very mannerable, and had a giving heart. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered for his loving ways and the wisdom he shared as God allowed him a long earthly life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his children, Doretha M. Pitchford, and Carlton, Glover, and Howard Ray Mills; six brothers, Eugene Pulley, Willie Mills, Jeremiah Mills, Hezekiah Mills, James Mills, and Claude Mills; four sisters, Lillian Taylor, Minnie Mills, Dora Brackett, and Jettie Johnson; and two sisters-in-law, Emma Mills and Ida Mae Bennett.
Those remaining to cherish the memory of his life and love are his sweet wife, Beulah Mae Mills of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four sons, Freeman Mills (Vanessa) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, his caretaker, Scholar Mills (Patricia) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Oswell Mills of Louisburg, NC, and Frank Mills (Brenda) of Littleton, NC; his sister, Rosa Mills Boyd of Littleton, NC; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Harris of Roanoke Rapids, NC; twenty-seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; sixteen great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 30, 2017, at the funeral home. Rev. Joseph L. Battle will officiate, and burial will follow in the Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, 127 Rock House Road, Littleton, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home until 8:30 P.M. on Saturday, July 29, 2017.
