On January 23, 1954, Dorest Lee Pitchford, affectionately known as “Hayman”, was born to the late Sam and Naomi Pitchford in Littleton, NC. He departed this earthly life on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, in Birmingham, Alabama.
At an early age, Dorest joined the South Street Baptist Church in Littleton, NC. His formal education was received in the public schools of Halifax County, North Carolina. He later joined the United States Navy where he served his tour of duty and was honorably discharged. Hayman then returned home to Littleton for a brief stay and married Doreatha Mills, who preceded him in death. To this union two children were born. He then relocated to Hampton, VA, where he became employed with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for many years before settling in Alabama.
In addition to his parents and wife, Dorest was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion “Sleepy” Pitchford and Roscoe Pitchford; and one sister, Verona Pitchford Gee.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Renada Mills; his son, Tavarris Mills, four grandchildren; Tivon, Davonte, Dashanay and Dmorenay; four sisters, Marguerite, of North Carolina, Millie Walker and Viola Jones of New York, and Betty Smith (Abe) of Alabama; two brothers, Charlie Pitchford (Goldie) of Las Vegas, and James Wright of North Carolina; one brother of the heart, George Pitchford (Betty) of Michigan; one aunt, Helen Pitchford Ashe of Littleton, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, October 21, 2017, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, NC. The Rev. Milton R. Solomon, Jr. will eulogize.
