Cortez Markie Pierce

Cortez Markie Pierce was born to Yulonda Pierce and the late Ricky Lee Davis on May 12, 1990, in Halifax County, North Carolina, and peacefully departed this earthly life on Friday, April 10, 2015, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

During his early life, Cortez accepted Jesus Christ, was baptized, and joined the Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He became a member of the Youth Choir and the Junior Missionary Ministry.

Cortez received his formal education in the Halifax County Public School System, where he graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, with the class of 2008. He then attended Halifax Community College in Weldon, North Carolina, before transferring to Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He was a tutor and the president of the mathematics and computer science clubs, and was scheduled to graduate with a 3.2 GPA on May 9, 2015, with a bachelor’s degree in Computer and Information Science.

In addition to his father, Cortez was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Walter “Shorty” Davis and Eva Burgess Davis.

Those remaining to forever celebrate the precious memories of his life and to reflect upon special moments shared are his mother, Yulonda Pierce, “His heart”; his maternal grandmother, Noralene Hawkins Pierce, “His soul”; his maternal great-grandparents, Raymond and Lenora Hawkins all of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his brother, Devin Davis of Littleton, NC; a special brother of the heart and best friend, Joey Jenkins of Greensboro, NC; a special friend, Katie Baire Sidlosky of Lakeside, CA; two aunts, Shantel Pierce, his special aunt, and Tonya Tyrone (Cedric) all of Roanoke Rapids, NC; three uncles, Vernon Pierce of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Steven Pierce (April) of Washington, DC, and Antonio Burgess (Bessie) of Littleton, NC; two special great-aunts, Dorothy Hughes ( Gilbert) and Sandra Hawkins all of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his special great-uncle, Raymond Hawkins, Jr.; his special cousins, Diona, Ashley, Steven (SJ), Ariel, Kevin, Lisa, Roxanna, Greg, Moneekia, Raymond, III, and a host of other great -aunts and uncles, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, April 17, 2015, at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Littleton, NC. Rev. Danny Jones will officiate, and burial will follow in the Hawkins Family Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The body will repose at the funeral home on Thursday, April 16, 2015, from 12:00 Noon – 8:00 P.M.
