Clara Levana Webb Underdue

CLARA LEVANA WEBB UNDERDUE was born on May 4, 1945, in Halifax County, North Carolina, and was the eleventh of the twelve children born to the late Wilbert Gilbert Webb and Josephine McCoy Webb. God called her from this earthly labor to her heavenly reward on Sunday, August 25, 2019, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

During her early life, Clara professed faith in Jesus Christ, was baptized, and became a member of the London Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Clara received her formal education in the public schools of Halifax County and graduated from the former John Armstrong Chaloner High School in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, with the class of 1963.  She then attended a business school in Raleigh, North Carolina, and completed her studies in Business Administration at Halifax Community College in Weldon, North Carolina, where she also became employed as a secretary after graduation.

In April 1966, Clara was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, Joe Ben Underdue, Jr., and they were married for fifty-three years. God blessed this union with two sons, Joe Ben III and Tyrone Augustus Underdue. She relocated to Newark, New Jersey, in 1966, and became employed at a cookie factory and later at Westinghouse. She united with Ephesians Baptist Church, joined the choir, and was active in other organizations of the church.

In 1975, Clara returned home to North Carolina, reunited with the London Missionary Baptist Church, and served as a Deaconess, Sunday school teacher, choir member, adviser to the youth department, Pastor’s Aide, and willingly volunteered with other ministries of the church.

After moving to Baltimore, Maryland, Clara immediately united with the Progressive Baptist Church, sang in the choir, and enjoyed the fellowship with the congregation and other functions of the church. She became employed at Bank of America and remained loyal and dedicated until 1996, when she returned home to care for her elderly mother.

Clara again reunited with her church and served diligently as the chairperson for the following ministries:  Deaconess, Pastor’s Aide, Homecoming and Church Anniversary, Choir, and Bible study. She served as Superintendent of Vacation Bible School for several years and was the Associate Director of the Summer Enrichment Program. She also reunited with the Women’s Auxiliary of the Neuse River Baptist Association as 2nd Vice-President, the Halifax County Missionary Union as 1st Vice-President, and chaired District 8 Group 1 of the Missionary Conference under the leadership of Rev. Debbie Hayes. She was presently employed with New Beginnings as a Day Support Para Professional.

Clara had a passion for singing! In addition to her own church choir, she also sang  with  Danny Jones and the Celestials, The Carrie Harrison Singers, and Augustus Cofield and the United Voices for Christ. She also sang solos at various churches whenever she was asked to do so. Her favorite songs were, “Blessed Assurance”, “Praise Him”, “I Still Have Joy”, and “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow”.

In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by two sisters, Queen Esther and Margaret Powell; and four brothers, Clyde McCoy, and Richard, Woodrow, and George L. Webb.

Her sweet spirit lives today and forever more in the hearts of her husband, Joe Ben Underdue, Jr. of the home; two sons, Joe Ben Underdue III  of Hampton, VA, and Tyrone Underdue of New York, New York; her stepson, Earl Barnes of Aulander, NC; her sister, Mary E.
