Carlton Lee Burgess, son of Adella Brinkley Burgess and the late James E. Burgess, was born on June 22, 1958, in Halifax County, North Carolina, and answered God’s call to eternal rest and peace on Saturday, July 4, 2015, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina.
During his early life, he was baptized into the Christian faith and joined the Lee’s Chapel Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina.
His formal education was received in the Halifax County Public School System. Immediately following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, served his country for six years and was honorably discharged. He then attended Halifax Community College in Weldon, North Carolina, majored in Correctional Officer’s Science, and became employed as an Officer with the Caledonia Correctional Institution in Tillery, North Carolina. He also served as an Officer with the Brunswick County Correctional Institution in Virginia and later became employed with Georgia Pacific and Howard Ray Construction. He attended Truck Driving School, received his CDL, and became an entrepreneur for “Burgess Express”.
He was united in Holy Matrimony to the former Gladys Faye Royster. God blessed this union with a blended family of his two children, Derrick Burgess and Arquez Lee Burgess of Littleton, NC; his three step-children, Lakeshia Ransome (Wallace) of Garysburg, NC, and Leslie and DeJuan Squire of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and his granddaughter, Cali Christian Harvey of Roanoke Rapids, NC, who will all miss his earthly presence and forever share the legacy of his love.
Those also left to cherish his precious memories are his mother, Adella B. Burgess of Littleton, NC; two sisters, Dr. Otelia Royster of Knightdale, NC (Dea. Milton) and Principal/CEO Hazel L. Burgess of Envisager Studio in San Diego, CA; two brothers, Larry Gray Burgess of Durham, NC, and Elmond Ray Burgess (Diane) of Randleman, NC; seven aunts, Velma Brinkley and Sarah Jefferson,of Littleton, NC, Alice Rivers and Annie Pearl Newell of New York, Susie Johnson (Kelly) of Norfolk, VA, Vivian Posa of Charlotte, NC, and Carolyn Mitchell (Rev. Geno) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; three uncles, Leroy Brinkley (Daisy) of Littleton, NC, and Robert Burgess and Melvin Burgess (Ella) all of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four other sisters-in-law, Jeanette LaFamina Burgess and Melanie Thompson (Joseph) all of Richmond, VA, Roselynda Harvey (Jesse) of Littleton, NC, and Shirlon Battle (Rev. Joseph) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; three brothers-in-law, McArthur Royster of Newport News, VA, Donnell Royster (Abigail) of Washington, DC, and Larry Davis of San Diego, CA; six nieces, Amiee Richardson (Darrell) of Nashville, NC, Amelia Royster of Raleigh, NC, and Christina LaFamina, Shanna Wilson (Shadazza), and Clystia Taylor (Kevin) all of Richmond, VA, and Andreau Burgess (Johnny) of Randleman, NC; six nephews, Gregory Lamont Royster (Scottie) of Riverdale, GA, Larry Burgess, Jr., James Edward Burgess, III, and Raphael Salvatore all of Richmond, VA, Kailan Burgess of Harrisburg, PA, and Jarvis Davis of San Diego, CA; and a host of great-nieces, cousins and friends.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Edward Burgess, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 18, 2015, at the Lee’s Chapel Baptist Church in Littleton, NC. The Pastor, Rev. Jeffrey Anderson, will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the St. Luke Baptist Church Cemetery in Littleton, NC. The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 P.M. on Friday, July 17, 2015, at the funeral home.
