Arrie Mariah “Fiz” Phipps Townes

ARRIE MARIAH “FIZ” PHIPPS TOWNES, was born on Christmas Eve, 1932, in Halifax County, North Carolina, to the late Roger Phipps and Alice Foots Phipps. She transitioned from this earthly life to her Heavenly home on Friday, February 10, 2017, at her home in the Summit Community of Littleton, North Carolina.

During her early life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, was baptized, and became a life-long member of the Fidelity Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. She loved her church, her Pastor, was active in Sunday school and Bible study, served on the Mother Board, the Missionary ministry, sang in the Senior Choir, and would also sing with the Mount Gilliam Baptist Church choir in Littleton, North Carolina, whenever she was needed. At Fidelity’s Homecoming celebrations, she would always raise large sums of money for the building fund and bake her “Big” cakes and other goodies to serve.

“Fiz” or “Mrs. Fiz, as she was so well known, was united in marriage to Jesse Gene Townes for over forty years until his death on September 28, 2000. She was the mother of two sons. Her son, James, passed away on December 14, 2015.

She worked all of her life, beginning in her early years with farming, as most families did at that time. In her later years, she became employed in the domestic industry, taking care of children and adults, and remained in that profession for over thirty years until her retirement.

“Fiz” enjoyed cooking, shopping, growing beautiful flowers, giving gifts, spending time with her family, friends, and neighbors, and taking a stroll up the road with her “Walking Buddies”. Her keen sense of humor, happy-loving spirit, giving heart, and strong Christian values truly defined her faith and belief in God. The two philosophies that guided her life were “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” and “Treat thy neighbor as thyself”.

In addition to her husband and son, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Anna P. Jefferies, Katie P. Young, Lillie P. Alston, and Ernest R., Joe H., Daniel, Matthew, Moses, Mark, Luke, and John T. Phipps.

Taylor (Fredah); twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; her sister, Mary P. Tabron;  and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who will all miss her earthly presence.
