ALFRED ALONZO “BUG” HARRIS was born on October 31, 1954, in Halifax County, North Carolina, to the late Plummer Harris and Alice Solomon Harris. He transitioned from this earthly life to enter his Heavenly home on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Alfred accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior during his early life and joined the Lee’s Chapel Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. After relocating to Taylorsville, South Carolina, and later to Raleigh, North Carolina, he became a member of the Tupper Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, on January 5, 1997. Alfred served in many capacities: Trustee, Men’s Ministry, Culinary Ministry, Deacon’s Ministry, and was also active in several other auxiliaries of the church. He loved his Pastor and the Tupper Memorial Baptist Church family.
Alfred received his formal education in the Halifax County Public School System and graduated from the former Eastman High School in Enfield, North Carolina, with the class of 1973. As a sports enthusiast, he was a member of the Eastman Kodaks Men’s Basketball Team. Alfred later graduated from Halifax Technical Institute (Halifax Community College) and became employed with J. P. Stevens and Company of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Leigh Fibers of South Carolina, and retired from Southeastern Freight Lines of Durham, North Carolina, after twenty years of loyal service.
Alfred was an “Outdoorsman” who truly loved camping, fishing, grilling, traveling, and spending time with his family. He was a person who was concerned about the well-being of others and never met a stranger. The Tupper Memorial Men’s Ministry recognized him as “Man of the Year” in 2014.
Those remaining to forever treasure the precious memory of his life and share the legacy of his love are his wife, Judith of the home; his stepson, Antonio Deans (Pam) of Spring Lake, NC; his siblings, Lillian Hedgepeth (Matthew) of Hollister, NC, Archie Lawrence (Wanda) of Crete, IL, and Alma Daniel (Herbert) of Durham, NC; his mother-in-law, Norris Deans of Raleigh, NC; his sister-in-law, Evelyn White of Garner, NC; three aunts, Lillian Solomon, Ruby Williams, and Nevy Solomon; one uncle, Elder Sidney Harris; his goddaughter, Tessa Jackson of Toccoa, GA; two special grands, Christin and Talynn Jackson of Toccoa, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, July 16, 2018, at the Pine Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 37571 US Highway 561, Hollister, NC. The Pastor, Rev. Robert G. Hedgepeth will preside, and Rev. Dr. H. C. Miller will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Odell Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, 1763 Embro Odell Road, Littleton, NC. The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home, 215 US Highway 158, Littleton, NC, on Sunday, July 15, 2018, from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. and at the Plummer and Alice Harris home site, 1082 Tabron School Road, Hollister, NC, from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. The body will repose at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
